About Mensa
American Mensa, and its parent organization, Mensa
International, are direct descendants of the British Mensa
organization which started after World War II. Read here
for a brief history of Mensa (thanks to De Freshwater,
Cleveland Area Mensa, for providing this piece).
Joining Mensa
Membership in American Mensa, as in Mensa International,
requires an IQ score in the top 2% on a standardized test
(joining American Mensa automatically makes you a
member of Mensa International).
This can be achieved
either by submitting prior evidence
of an
acceptable score
on a test from our list, or by testing directly.
AML announces the return of the successful "Spring
Doubleheader" to be held during the month of April.
Anyone who buys a Mensa Home Test in the month of April
will receive $5 off the regular price of $18. Then, if you return
the completed Home Test by May 31, you'll receive a coupon
worth $5 off the Mensa Admission Test (regular price $40)
which will be valid until July 31.
Benefits
The reasons to join Mensa are as varied as the members
themselves, but aside from the pleasure of having a card in
your wallet, here are a few other reasons we can think of:
- Fellowship - Mensa offers opportunities to connect with
other Mensans in a variety of ways. Special Interest Groups
(AKA SIGS) are one popular way. A listing of the current
SIGS can be found here. Online interaction is also popular
- information about online groups can be found here. Finally,
Mensans also connect locally, regionally and nationally at
events of all sorts, from local Games Nights to Regional
Gatherings and Colloquia. You can find event information here.
- Gifted Children - Support for both parents and children is
offered, with support groups, educational information,
webpages designed for children
(Mensa For Kids) and activities.
Further information can be found here.
- Scholarship - The Mensa Education and Research Foundation
(AKA MERF) is "committed to the pursuit of excellence in the
areas of intelligence." This is achieved via publications about
intelligence, awards and an annual scholarship competition.
- Travel - Beyond the regional and national events are
international events, hosted by groups around the world,
often with American Mensans in attendance.
Also,
the
SIGHT program (the Service of Information,
Guidance
and Hospitality to Travelers) is available to all
members,
both as hosts and as travellers. More
information about
SIGHT can be found here.
